Everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s weekend, and this Writer in Residence finds herself in Topeka. Here, the major events include an annual Bed Race and annual Parade.
Yes, I said Bed Race. ‘Tis actually the Great Topeka Bed Race. This year 23 teams compete. Teams consist of four Runners and one Rider. They dress in costume and design the bed to a theme. From the Start Line they run beds to a point where the rider rises and changes pajamas, and gets back in. The Runners hurry back. “How fast the Rider changes could make or break their winning chances,” says Lynne Crabtree, Director of Grants and Communications, Housing and Credit Counseling Inc.
Housing and Credit Counseling hosts the Great Topeka Bed Race. This will be their sixth annual celebration. Twenty-three Bed Teams will compete — 18 are returning Teams, 5 new. “Some aim for Best Race Time,” says Ms. Crabtree. “Others compete for Best Decorated Bed.”
The Great Bed Race event begins 10 a.m. Saturday March 15, with the National Anthem sung by Elizabeth McKinley. Afterwards, the Bed Teams compete.
All Bed Teams are invited to participate in the Topeka annual St. Patrick’s Parade, that kicks off at noon.
