Felicity – definitions of happiness

November 9, 2016

___ Dictionary.com lists the first three definitions of  felicity as:
1. the state of being happy, especially in a high degree; bliss.
2. an instance of this.
3. a source of happiness.

As ’tis with dictionary definitions, the most common usage is listed first, and subsequent definitions generally via lesser usage.

This, darlings, welcomes exploring all definitions of a word. They tend to be related. Sometimes the latter definitions are the very tools we need for our expression at hand.

That said, let’s begin with the first definition.
Isn’t it breathtaking, “the state of being happy, especially in a high degree.” Likely each of us may recall times we felt this — a degree of happiness that reaches deeply within and pulsates throughout every molecule of our awareness. Perhaps felicity in moments with a lover, or felicity in the relationship. Felicity reaped from a garden you nurtured or from overcoming a challenge.

Second definition, “an instance of this.”
Sometimes reaching such a core of happiness happens in an instant. And ’tis memorable.  A usage  example, “I felt a felicity when I realized this stranger in passing, per his gesture understood my expressing convictions, while my friends, after knowing me for years, still seemed uncomfortable.”

Third definition: “a source of happiness.” For example, ‘my child is my felicity.’

Benjamin Franklin, in his noted autobiography, addresses Felicity. “Human felicity is produced not so much by great pieces of good fortune that seldom happen, as by little advantages that occur every day.”

Felicity is intense, precious, and bestows large momentous doses, or  small perpetual resourses.

What memories of felicity do you relish?
