Love for Words — Viticulture

June 15, 2018

___  Viticulture is “wine agriculture.”

The word origin joins two Latin words
they are:
vitis that means “vine” , referring to grapevine
— and cultura that means “cultivation, or agriculture.”

The agriculture part of this root refers to part of the “agriculture” definition that is
— “the science, art, or occupation concerned with cultivating land, and raising crops.”

Yet Viticulture is specifically the cultivation of grapes, especially for use in making wine.

Viticulture is definitely a winegrower’s and winemaker’s occupation. They might have different opinion regarding whether they consider it a “science” or an “art.”
