'Irish Day' in  ol' Gold Mining country

Baagpipe music will echo through the Sierra Foothills, emanating from the small town  Murphys, California, on Saturday March 19th. That’s the annual Murphys Irish Day.
Main Street will be blocked off for the annual celebration. Kilt-clad bagpipers will be part of the street entertainment, as will cloggers. while folks peruse the wares of over 100 venders. Selections include Irish t-shirts and hats, as well as handcrafted clothing and jewelry. For folks who are hungry, available fare includes corned beef sandwiches, Irish Nachos*, Irish coffee, and green cotton candy.
Heritage and history
Murphys Irish Day not only celebrates the St. Patrick’s Day season, but also celebrates this small town’s history. Murphys is named after the brothers Daniel and John Murphy. They were immigrants who settled in this area in 1848, and established a trading post – just in time for the great California Gold Rush.
It’s said that the Murphy brothers became millionaires while they were still in their 20's. The area that later became their namesake, grew into a thriving gold mining town. It was among the wildest of the Wild West.
Yet, when the gold findings subsided, and the gold rush dust blew away, this town didn’t fall desolate to wind and tumbleweeds. It evolved into a cozy community.
Today Murphys has a population of 2,000. It has art galleries, a local theatre, B&B’s, hotels, boutiques, restaurants and wine tasting rooms. Some of these establishments are housed in buildings from the gold rush era.
The shops along Main Street will be open during the Murphys Irish Day celebration, and some might offer their own part of the celebration.
Murphys Irish Day festivities begin as early as 8 a.m., with a pancake breakfast, and last till 5 p.m. The annual parade begins at 11 a.m., and includes equestrian units like the Tuolumne Sheriff’s Posse and Rehorse Rescue Ranch, dogs from the Sierra West Bernese Mountain Dog Club.
Also marching will be local girl scouts, boy scouts, the Ebbetts Pass Veterans, the Mother Lode Madams, and of course, bagpipers.
