Love the Wine Country while you travel
While traveling, and seeking diversions, bear in mind that a wine trail, a winery, or a wine region might be within driving distance. Or, the regional vintners might be celebrating in your metropolis. Simply search online for wineries and wine regions in your destination area, or ask around when you arrive. Especially now that the warm season sets in, the tasting season begins and many vintners invite guests to fete the season with them. Here are a few examples of vintner and wine region goings-on. Indiana Wine Trail The Indiana Wine Trail consists of six wineries in southeast Indiana, along the Ohio river where Indiana, Ohio and Kentucky meet. It’s within driving distance of Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Louisville. —Indiana Wine Trail VIP Passport. Visit all six wineries and receive a special gift. Complete a short survey and be eligible for a Grand Prize, to be awarded in January. —“Spring into the Valley,” Indiana Wine Trail, April 16th-17th. Wineries offer tastings that pair their wines with a variety of breads and cheeses. Willamette Valley, Oregon The Oregon Willamette Valley lies between the Oregon Cascade Mountains and the Coastal Range. It’s over 100 miles long, and stretches 60 miles at the widest point. —“South Willamette Valley Wineries Barrel Tours" Saturdays June 4th, 18th & 25th. Tour via a deluxe charter bus to four wineries, and receive VIP treatment while tasting three select wines, with appetizers, at each. Tickets are $60. Grop rates are available. —Mountains to Metro, Portland Oregon, May 6th. Vintners from thirty Chehalem Mountains wineries come to the Portland historic Governor Hotel to join city dwellers in toasting to the wine country. Artisan wines are paired with delicious hors d’oeuvres from top Portland restaurants. Calaveras County, California The Calaveras County wine country is located in the Sierra Foothills, between Yosemite and Lake Tahoe. —“Passport Weekend” June 24th-26th, Murphys California. “Passport” holders begin the weekend with a “Taste the World of Calaveras” tasting in Murphys Community Park. Wines to taste feature grapes with “roots” in five different regions of the world and complementing cuisine. The weekend continues with special tastings and live music.
