Know your food — a backpacker makes a trek for awareness

February, 2015 _______________

Taylor Lancaster is trekking across the continental United States to support GMO labeling efforts. He invites folks to join him along the route and via social media.
O yes! He’s on a journey from the California Santa Monica Pier to the Statue of Liberty off the New York City shore. From ocean to ocean, crossing the southwest desert, the snowy heartland terrain, on to eastern states. — on foot. Mr. Lancaster “stepped off” January 5th, 2015. The journey is estimated to span a year.

This on a “Walk 2 Know: Walking Across America” expedition to advocate GMO labeling. Orion Brutoco, Project Manager of the Walk 2 Know team, says that the mission is neither for nor against GMOs. “It’s about giving people the right to know what’s in their food.”
Allow me to begin with a reference to GMO labeling. After, I will elaborate on the Walk 2 Know mission, and ways you may partake.

A call for GMO labeling
GMO stands for “Genetically Modified Organisms.” They are living organisms whose genetic material have been artificially altered by genetic engineering techniques — also referred to as GM. GMO plant products, for example, may be modified to resist herbicides and resist pests.
Also referred to as GM, techniques include inserting or attaching genes from other plants, animals, viruses, or bacteria into a food’s organism. This is a veritably new science, and there is controversy over whether GMOs are safe for human consumption or for the environment, or if they are perilous.
GMO labeling bills are hitting state legislatures across the country. A call for a GMO label mandate simply is to require that food or ingredients containing GMs be clearly labeled. This to give people the right to know what is in the food they consider to purchase.

Walk 2 Know… your food
What you eat is what you put in your body, but of course. Taylor Lancaster is on a friendly mission to remind folks of that, and to bring to their attention the importance of GMO labeling.
Mr. Lancaster joins forces with the California-based Omega Point Institute, a nonprofit organization that supports select humanity improvement projects. Omega provided an initial financial grant for Mr. Lancaster to set on this Walk, and assembled a team to manage the route and to host traditional and social media coverage.
The Walk is so Mr. Lancaster may tread mile by mile and meet people face to face to promote awareness regarding GMO labeling. ‘Tis fueled by Mr. Lancaster’s trekking energy, and the folks he inspires along the way.
“For us on the team, this is a tipping point,” says Orion Brutoco, Project Manager, regarding the GMO awareness mission. “People are getting smarter about what they’re eating and what they’re buying.” This is a reminder that they can make a difference by demanding to know whether or not their food has GMOs.
Mr. Lancaster was in Phoenix Arizona February 12th. Two weeks later he made it to Globe Arizona. He is scheduled to arrive in Albuquerque New Mexico March 21st.
