Biking Across Kansas — bicyclers and townships celebrate

May 23, 2017 _______________________________

Over 800 bicyclists will pedal along a 513-mile route for the 43rd annual Biking across Kansas, endearingly known as BAK, June 10th-17th. For eight days they will ride across Kansas roadways, and spend overnights in select townships.
This has been an annual tradition since 1975. Here’s more information.

The route
The Biking Across Kansas route changes each year. Essentially, it begins at a township near the Colorado border, continues via Kansas highways and byways, and ends at a township near the Missouri border.
Coordinating the route becomes a science, says Stefanie Weaver, Executive Director of Biking Across Kansas, Inc. The staff work to select townships for overnight stay that BAK has not featured before, or that has not featured in a long while. They aim for an approximate number of miles between overnight townships, usually between 50 and 70 miles each stretch. This measured taking in mind whether the stretch includes hilly or flat terrain.
This year part of the BAK Route includes the Smoky Valley Scenic Byway, along US 283, showing native wild grasses and wildflowers.
The townships
“Once we decide the townships we want to include, the real magic happens,” says Mrs. Weaver. BAK coordinators contact city officials to see if the town could accommodate 800+ cyclists to park their bikes for the scheduled evening. And as important, to see if they may present a festive welcome.
Overnight accommodations generally include local school gym floors for sleeping bags, and locker room facilities. As for the festive welcome, each township presents its own style. Communities have welcomed BAK bicyclists with ice cream socials, opening beer gardens and hosting street fairs.
This year six communities along the route present live music from local or regional musicians. The evening in Tonganoxie, for example, includes a live music performance by Rusty Rierson, a former “American Idol” contestant.
