nonagenerian — an age descriptive

April 7, 2015
___ A nonagenarian is someone living a long, and hopefully lovely life.

‘Tis a person who is in their 90’s, more specifically someone 90-99 years old.

Pronounced [nonn-uh-juh-NAIR-ee-uhn], this derives from Latin words “nona,” meaning nine, + “ginta” meaning ten times.

Nonagenarian may also be an adjective to describe someone or something that is 90 to 99 years old.

Usage examples
● Zane spoke endearingly of Aunt Jennifer, a feisty nonagenarian full of vim. She organizes group tours to local dances monthly, and hosts a Gin Rummy games every Tuesday night.
● Walter is a nonagenarian widower who is a bit of a recluse. He seems to prefer staying in his room at the senior home.
● The Bells township history committee members celebrate the nonagenarian schoolhouse that they converted to a museum.

By the by, other age groups may be recognized in a similar manner: “quinquagenarian” describes someone or something in their 50’s; sexagenarian describes someone or something in their 60’s — septuagenarian in their 70’s, octogenarian in their 80’s.

Who are nonagenarians you have the pleasure of knowing?
