Love for Words — ‘Pink Moon’

April 7, 2017

____ The April full moon is known as the Pink Moon.

This reference was used by early Colonial Americans, who learned from Native American Indians to observe the moon phases. Native Americans follow a lunar calendar, and name each Full Moon as it reflects the season, and the nature that happens below that moon.

The April full moon is named Pink Moon to reflect the first flowers to flourish throughout the U.S. and Canada as spring begins. These honored flowers are moss pink herb, and wild phlox — both bringing shades of pink across the landscape.

This year, according to Space.com, the Pink Moon will be at full phase April 11th at 2:08 a.m. Eastern Time, 1:08 a.m. Central time, and as we proceed west the full phase actually hits late evening April 10th, 11:08 p.m. Pacific Time.

pink hued moon?

Pink! …?
Now, in hearing we are about to behold the annual Pink Moon, we might relish visions of turning chins up to a big, round moon that has a pink hue.

Yet, most likely not. Remember, this name given the April Full Moon honors the flowers presently beneath it. Native Americans tribes have given this Full Moon other names, including “Sprouting Grass Moon” — and on the east coast “Fish Moon,” as this is the time shad swim upstream to spawn. Knowing that, we don’t expect to behold a pale green moon, and certainly not a moon that shows a fish.

So, nix the anticipation of beholding a moon that is pink, the wee hours of April 11th. Yet love that this moon shows full to illuminate our springtime.

Do you plan to gaze upon this year’s Pink Moon?
