sundries — the little things

May 9, 2015
___ Sundries are small items that have something small in common.

They have in common being in a certain category, or be in a specified area. They are so small they are mentioned together rather than individually.

The American Heritage Dictionary online defines “sundries” as:
— Articles too small or numerous to be specified; miscellaneous items.

Here are a few “sundries” usage examples:
● The motel room rate includes a cozy bed in clean accommodations and minimal bathroom sundries.
● Her purse contained peppermints, hair ties, receipts and other sundries. Sometimes it also included money, she joked.
● He used one of the drawers to keep sundries like rolls of tape, rubberbands, screwdrivers and cell phone rechargers.

Crazy enough “sundries” is a plural noun, yet it does not have a single version. What we would think as its single counterpart, “sundry” is an adjective that may describe such items — that are unrelated yet found in the same area. For example:
● While waiting in line at the cash register, he perused sundry items including tabloids, batteries, and candy bars.

Do you have a special place for your sundries?
